
Biography
Garib Shamil oglu Mammadov was born on January 6, 1947, in the village of Yeni Yol, Amasia district of the Armenian SSR.
In 1966, he entered the Faculty of Geography and Biology at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute (now the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University).
He graduated from the institute with honors in 1970.
From 1972 to 1973, he served in the army.
After completing his military service, he began working at the Scientific Research Sector of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.
Scientific Activity and Achievements
In 1978, he defended his Ph.D. thesis in “Soil Science.”
In 1991, he defended his doctoral dissertation (Doctor of Biological Sciences) in the specialty of “Ecology.”
He is a Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences, and a Full Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (NASA).
Since 1984, he has served as the Head of the Laboratory of Agroecology and Soil Bonitation at the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry.
Under his leadership, a significant scientific foundation in soil science has been established: numerous dissertations have been prepared, monographs published, and soil maps of Azerbaijan and ecological land assessments developed.
In one of his presentations at Baku State University, he introduced interactive electronic maps for ecological land assessment using GIS technologies.
Main Research Areas
Soil Science: Agroecological characterization of pasture and agricultural lands.
Ecological land assessment, land cadastre, and soil bonitation (soil quality evaluation).
Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cartography, and aerospace data for land resource assessment.
Public and Organizational Activity
He served as a deputy of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of the Republic of Azerbaijan from 1995 to 2000.
From 1997 to 2015 was a chairman of the State Land Committee. Since 2004 a head of the department of Soil science in the faculty of Ecology and Soil science of Baku State University. From in 2011 to 2016 worked as an academician – secretary of the Department of Agrarian sciences in ANAS. Since 2016 – the Adviser of ANAS for agrarian problems. He is married, has two children.
He has held leading positions in the land management and cartography sectors of Azerbaijan.
He is an active member of several international academies, including the International Academy of Ecology and Energy and the Russian Ecological Academy, among others.
Awards and Honors
In 2022, his 75th anniversary was celebrated.
He has received high awards for his contribution to the development of soil science and ecological research in Azerbaijan.
Significance
Garib Mammadov is considered one of Azerbaijan’s leading soil scientists and ecologists. His work has strengthened the scientific foundation for land resource assessment in the country, promoted the use of modern technologies (GIS, cartography), and contributed to the training of specialists in agricultural and environmental sciences.
