Galeybugurd – medieval castle in Azerbaijan. It is located on the top of the mountain near the village of Galaybugurt, 20 km northwest of Shamakhi city. Archaeological excavations show that Bugurt Castle was inhabited in the 11th-13th centuries. The ruins of some walls, turrets, and settlements have remained in the fortress. It is mentioned in the sources from the end of the 15th century. In 1509, when Shah Ismail I attacked Shirvan, Shirvanshah was defended in the fortress of Sheikhshah Bugurt. During the rebellion in Shirvan in 1537, Shirvanshah Shahrukh and courtiers were forced to hide in the castle. In 1538, Safavid troops led by Alqas Mirza attacked Shirvan. Shahrukh and lawyer Huseyn Bey, who retreated to Bugurt Castle, were able to resist the Safavids for several months. In that period, the treasure of the Shirvanshahs was kept in the Bugurt fortress. During the Safavid-Ottoman wars, the Ottomans captured this fortress and turned it into one of their strongholds. The castle was used for defense purposes until the end of the 17th century.
