Azykh cave is Azerbaijan’s oldest cave, which is inhabited by people. This cave is one of the world’s oldest human habitats. Azykh cave is located in the Fuzuli district of Garabagh. In 1960, an expedition led by Azerbaijani archaeologist Mammadali Huseynov discovered Azykh cave and began to explore it. It became clear that it was the habitat of the world’s oldest human beings (they were called Azykhantrops). The low jaw bone of a human of the neanderthal species was discovered in 1968 by M.Huseynov in Azykh cave. The find was discovered to have a 350-400 thousand-year history, according to the research carried out on it. In the cave, bones relating to bear, lion, rhino, deer, horse, boar, and other wild animals were also discovered. In the cave, traces of a bonfire and stone instruments were also discovered. These instruments are estimated to be 1 to 1.5 million years old. The jaw bone found in Azykh cave is the second in the world by its age, according to specialists. In Tanzania, Kenya, and France, archaeological finds of this nature related to earlier periods were discovered. It is enough to show that Azerbaijan has its own unique place among the ancient human societies. Azykh cave covers 800 square kilometers in size. The Azykh cave draws attention to the fact that it is the largest of the caucasus’ caves so far.
