Taxila – City of Cut Stone

Taxila located in the Rawalpindi district of Pakistan’s Punjab province. Taxila is one of the most important archaeological sites in Asia. Taxila includes Buddhist monasteries and a Muslim mosque and madrassa. The archaeological sites of Saraikala, Bhir, Sirkap and Sirsukh are collectively of unique importance in illustrating the evolution of urban settlement on the Indian subcontinent.

Taxila, however, is most famous for ruins of several settlements, the earliest dating from around 1000 BCE. It is known for its collection of Buddhist religious monuments, including the Dharmarajika stupa, the Jaulian monastery, and the Mohra Muradu monastery. In 1980,Taxila was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Taxila is home to many secondary educational institutes including CIIT Wah Campus and HITEC University. The University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila was established in 1975 as a campus of the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore and offers bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in engineering.

Taxila Museum has one of the most significant and comprehensive collections of stone Buddhist sculpture from the first to the 7 centuries in Pakistan known as Gandharan art. The core of the collection comes from excavated sites in the Taxila Valley, particularly the excavations of sir John Marshall.

Currently, approximately 7000 artifacts are displayed at the Taxila Museum and around 30,000 are preserved in the reserve collection. The collection includes sacred relics of Buddha, stone and stucco sculptures, stupas, relic caskets, inscriptions, beads, jewelry, coins, tools, pottery, utensils, and numerous other architectural and household objects.

Local and foreign tourists visiting the Taxila Museum can see the unique and attractive artifacts found in various ancient monuments of the Gandhara civilization.

Pakistan is rich in its historical culture. There are a large number of historical places, memorials to the heroes of Pakistan. Here architectural monuments-buildings where very famous people lived. It is incredibly great that humanity has the opportunity to visit museums, historical places, and explore the history.
